A Curious Case of Multiple Hat Disorder

Our Family’s Bible Memory Work

As a family we have committed to memorizing as much of the Bible as we can. One of our goals this homeschool year is one that we have made a goal since year one, day one on our very first day of class. We want to hide HIS word in our hearts. (Psalm 119:11) And I am more convinced now than ever that we might one day be in situation where the Bible might not be accessible or if it is, it might have been edited. I was shocked to learn that there have been lawsuits filed against Bible publishers alleging that their version of the Bible violates constitutional rights and has caused emotional distress. I’m just saying this is a different world we live in now and I am telling my kids that one day, they might be in a situation where the only Bible they can access is the one hidden in their hearts.

Our plan is to cycle through the below list one a morning, during the first part of our morning routine. On Sunday’s we hit several of them to check progress. This of course is not a complete list….it’s just the beginning. I would like to add a whole boat load of scripture.

Fruit of the Spirit

Our kiddos learned the fruit of the spirit by listening to the song below on our Little Songbird CD. It is fun and will get your thumbs snapping and shoulders moving.

Books of the Bible

This is the absolute best best best song in the whole world to learn the books of the Bible. Seriously!

12 Disciples

We just recently found this one. It is fun and short and we always have to press play at least one more time because the kids say again! Again! Again!

9 Gift of the spirit

Now seriously, just being honest….this song is so creepy. My kiddos and husband love it. I get all religious and wonder why they are using a creepy voice. My kiddos love imitating it and can of course tell you all the gifts of the spirit.

10 commandments

We had just started to memorize the 10 commandments when I realized that we were going to be learning them the first 2 weeks of CC Cycle 1. I had us switch from the kid version poster board to the real thing.

Commandments 1-5

Commandments 6-10

We also are taking them through the 7 Realities of Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby.

Once we get all of these down pat, we will be adding more. I would like to do the Lord’s prayer, the beatitudes, the 23rd Psalm, the Roman Roads, and a bunch more.

Of course they know Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

John 15:5 is one of our favorite family verses. This one to us is like the law of gravity! I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Another goal we have for this year is to do all of our work enthusiastically for the LORD. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men. So this one will be repeated a lot I guarantee!

In cycle 3 the girls learned (who am I kidding, we all learned) John 1:1-7 in Latin and in English. And in cycle 2 we memorized Ephesians chapter 6.

This is the beauty of homeschool….we get to pick our values. This is what we value! How does your family do bible memory? Any links you can share? Please share!
