A Curious Case of Multiple Hat Disorder

Today I wore the hat of a Yard Sale-er and I think I did a pretty good job at it!

Today I wore the hat of a Yard Sale-er and I think I did a pretty good job at it!

Every Saturday I can, I give myself a $20 allowance from LMNOP’s budget and set out for some great bargains.

I searched craigslist last night before I went to bed and there wasn’t much posted. Searched it again this morning and found a jackpot. Glad I didn’t find it last night or I might not have slept so well. It was a neighborhood yard sale with 30 participants. Each participating house had 2 red balloons and they were also passing out neighborhood maps. Brilliant! I met a friend near by and we headed on over.

At our first stop of the day I snagged a Radio Flyer Scooter for Lyds.. It was in great condition. The handle bars are low, the base is wide enough for both of her feet (even in her ridiculous crocs) and it was a name brand. Right next to it was a little tikes push mower for the yard, marked $5. I was sure if a rinky dink lawnmower was going to go for $5 that this radio flyer scooter was going to be marked $15. I was all set to haggle. Turns out it wasn’t marked. Asked the lady how much she wanted and she said, eh, $5? Holy cow sold! I scooped it right up and headed to the car before she changed her mind. Got home, looked online…that baby retails for $40!

The next stop was this almost mint condition hardly used hop scotch rug. Perfect for LMNOP. Perfect for a rainy day. Hours and hours of independent play and I can sit back and sip lemonade as they learn sharing, counting, hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, taking turns and get some exercise.  The best part is that it rolls up to nothing and can be stored in a closet. It is also a great “seller” to put out when I have an interview or tour of the daycare. It was a husband wife duo.  The husband approached me first. I asked how much, he said 10, I said would you take 7. He said I’ll ask her but I doubt it. Waited a minute, he got distracted, she was free before he was able to ask her so I pointed to the rug he was holding for me and said would you take 7, before he had a chance to taint it with his tone of not wanting to haggle, she sighed and said $8. Done! Got home, looked online…it retails for $40! Score!

At the same stop, AB, my dear dear daughter who is in love with dogs, found a puzzle that had a dog on it. She was armed with $2 of her own hard earned money. I think it was a wise purchase. I made her ask the lady how much she wanted, $1 a little steep but didn’t want to push my haggling graces with her and also wanted AB to feel good about her purchase. I helped her count out her money and we paid the nice lady. I also snagged a paint with water book for Lydia, you remember the ones from when we were little, the pictures have all these dots on them and when wet, turn into paint. I can definitely add that to my Mary Poppins bag when we go to a meeting without childcare. The puzzle and paint book probably retailed for $8 and we got it for $1.25

After hitting a few duds, come on people, a half empty bottle of unlabeled cologne in a free bin, live a little, just throw it away, we came across another promising yard sale. We of course went straight to the toys and lo and behold we found barney, not just any barney, we found a barney schoolhouse play set with 2 barneys, a handful of kiddos, and playground equipment all stuffed inside it. I know most moms hate barney, and don’t even get me stated on the songs but really barney doesn’t get on my nerves but I can relate, have you ever heard yo gaba gaba…shoot me now! Anyways, it was marked $3. Lyds was attaching herself to it already, AB had unpacked it and set it up. I sighed as the super nice lady looked on as she saw her daughters old toy come to life. She said she didn’t know if there was anyone out there that even liked barney anymore. I looked at my girls and said you are gonna make me go get my purse aren’t you. They ignored me and continued to play. Lydia had loaded the 2 barneys into a nearby Barbie car and was pushing them along. I ran, grabbed my purse and came back. I asked the lady if she would take $2. She said yes and that she was glad to see it go to a good home. After we got home, I looked on ebay, this little set is “vintage 1993” and is going for $30. One little cool thing about it is they lady had 2 little wooden fisher price people in there too. Those are going for about $2 each on ebay as well. So we are talking $34 value for $2.

At the second to last stop, we were starting to deal with heavier traffic, crazy parkers, “Geez ladies” and an antsy Lyds. We snagged an Eric Barbie for AB, who is in love with Ariel (the little mermaid) but not the Ariel who shows her belly, just he Ariel after she gets married and wears a pink dress. Lyds was playing with a match box school bus, something every daycare needs. They said $1 for Eric, I asked them if they would take $1 for the school bus and Eric. They were happy to see them both go. I figure they retail for about $16 total. I think $1 is a great deal.

The goal is to always stay as long as my precious 20mo Lyds would let us. She had a small melt down over a $.50 cent beach ball I informed her we did not need, you know the kind where they turn into a limp spaghetti noodle and refuse to be moved. I scooped her up and called it a day but not before snagging a hardback children’s book still with the plastic cover on it. It was an autographed copy of What is Funny? by Etan Boritzer. It retails for $14.35 at Barnes and Noble. I couldn’t pass up a chance for an autographed book for $0.25. You never know the value it could have one day.

I would say today was a good haul. We only spent $17.50. We were well under our $20 budget and my unofficial calculations suggest that it was all valued at $152.35. We were home by 10:30 and have the rest of the day ahead of us with lots more hats to try on.
